Tony Baker

Stage Director

Tony moved towards directing after more than a decade working as a designer in Opera. Having always had a strong interest in the actual rehearsal process and how the performers used the space as much as conceiving the setting and context for a production, this seemed like a natural progression.

Initially he worked on productions as a co-director/designer, Beatrix Cenci (Geneva) and was responsible for a revival in Bilbao of a work he designed originally for the Theatre des Champs Elysees, Paris (Der Freischuetz) . He was given the opportunity to direct and design outright with a production of Tippett's "The Knot Garden" for the Cantiere D'Internazionale D'Arte in Montepulciano in 2005. Following on from this he has continued to work for various UK companies including New Sussex Opera, Surrey Opera, Opera Brava and Grimeborn, as well as occasionally producing his own work. His experience both on and offstage gives him a unique insight into both performer's needs and the technical and practical knowledge needed to bring a work succesfully to the stage.

Anthony Baker’s superb staging (beautifully lit by Mark Doubleday) brought a living intensity to what can seem like rather schematic characters in Tippett’s work. Against a set of opaque flats whose distorted reflections seemed to amplify the personal angst of the characters on stage, Baker gave us a reading of this complex work that was absorbing and unexpectedly clear without being simplistic.
